Shingles (Herpes Zoster) is an infection caused by a virus of the nerve endings in the skin. The disease is characterized by blister and crust formation and severe pain along the involved nerve which may last for several weeks. The infection commonly occurs on the chest or abdomen, although it may occur on the face around the eyes.
The B vitamins are necessary for the proper functioning of the nerves. Intra-muscular injections of thiamine hydrochloride and vitamin B12 are sometimes used in the treatment of herpes zoster. Vitamins A and C help promote healing of the skin lesions characteristic of the disease.
